Overview — Carrying Place Swing Bridge

The Carrying Place Swing Bridge spans the eastern end of the Murray Canal near the historic portage route of Carrying Place. At 8 ft closed clearance, this is lower than the western bridge and will require opening for virtually all cruising vessels. The bridge opens on signal during Parks Canada operating hours.

Bridge piers are north of the canal axis. A Parks Canada floating wharf is located close east of this bridge (61 ft long, 9 ft depths). Pass south of the piers at all times.

This is the lower of the two Murray Canal bridges at 8 ft closed — plan for it to open. A Parks Canada floating wharf just east of the bridge provides 61 ft of tie-up with 9 ft of water, useful if you need to wait for the bridge. The east approach channel has 7 ft depths. Stay south of the piers.

Submerged power and telephone cables cross near each swing bridge. Former bridge pier remnants in canal at 3.8, 1.6, and 1.3 km from east end.

Waterway Context

Named for the ancient portage route used by Indigenous peoples and early European explorers to cross between the Bay of Quinte and Lake Ontario. The Murray Canal was built in 1889 to replace this overland portage.
