Overview — Indian Island — Bay of Quinte

Indian Island sits in the Bay of Quinte approximately 1.6 km northeast of the east entrance to the Murray Canal. This is a logical overnight stop for boats entering the Trent-Severn Waterway from Lake Ontario before proceeding to Lock 1 at Trenton, roughly 12 km northeast via the canal. The island is small and wooded with approximately 7 ft of depth in the anchorage area. A submerged power cable crosses from the mainland in an ESE direction to the island — anchor well clear of this cable. Indian Island Bank lies to the east of the island with a least depth of 1 ft, so approach from the west or south and give the eastern side a wide berth.

🧤 Captain’s Anchorage Notes

Approach from the west or south side of the island only. Indian Island Bank to the east shoals to 1 ft and is not always obvious in calm conditions. The submerged power cable running ESE from the mainland to the island means you should not anchor in that corridor. Set your hook in 7 ft on the protected side of the island based on prevailing wind direction. This anchorage works best as a one-night stop before transiting the Murray Canal to Trenton and Lock 1.

§8

⚠️ Hazards & Warnings

Submerged power cable crosses from the mainland ESE to Indian Island — do not anchor in this corridor. Indian Island Bank to the east has a least depth of 1 ft and extends well out from the island. Approach from the west or south only.

Seasonal: This anchorage sees the most use in spring and early summer as boats stage for their northbound transit of the Trent-Severn. Southbound boats returning in fall may also stop here before exiting to Lake Ontario. Expect more traffic near the Murray Canal entrance on summer weekends.
