Lock 07 Glen Ross sits in a narrow channel on the north side of the Trent River at Kilometre 22.2, approximately 11 kilometres upstream of Lock 06 Frankford and 18 kilometres downstream of Lock 08 Percy Reach. Originally known as Chisholm’s Rapids, this is the seventh lock ascending northbound from Trenton and carries the smallest lift on the Trent section at just 3.0 metres (10 feet). The surrounding area within the Township of Stirling-Rawdon, Hastings County, is renowned for muskellunge fishing, and the nearby Hastings Heritage Trail provides direct walking and cycling access from the lock grounds.

The original masonry lock at Chisholm’s Rapids dates to 1841, making it one of the earliest structures on the Ontario–Rice Lake division. During the major canal reconstruction period, the Canadian General Development Company received what Parks Canada records as the smallest contract in the division and replaced the 1841 lock with the current larger concrete structure. A new concrete dam was built upstream to replace the original wooden dam, and an extensive concrete-lined navigation channel was constructed above the lock, running parallel to the Trent River. In 2017–2018, Parks Canada undertook a significant rehabilitation of both the Glen Ross Swing Bridge and Lock 07, completing structural repairs and reopening the bridge in November 2018.

Lock 07 Glen Ross is one of the quieter stops on the southern Trent section, set in a peaceful rural landscape with well-maintained grounds featuring terraced flower beds and an expansive picnic area. The lock sees considerably less traffic than the cluster of six locks between Trenton and Frankford, offering a welcome respite for boaters. Birch’s Landing, a small general store located just southwest of the lock, carries basic groceries, bait, tackle, and ice — useful for an overnight stay. Boaters should note that this is one of only two lockstations on the entire TSW system (along with Lock 04 Batawa) where potable water is not available, so top up your tanks at Lock 06 Frankford before departing.

Captain Dustin’s Tips — Lock 07 – Glen Ross

Simple approach in principle, but you have to stay in the channel — and I don’t think they’ve got enough markers out here to make that obvious. HAZARD: there’s a big shoal on the port side that you need to stay off. Could use another marker or two in my opinion, so don’t assume the buoyage will keep you honest. Eyes on the chart, eyes on the depth, and favor the starboard side of the channel through the approach. Once you’re past the shoal, it’s straightforward. The dam is completely separated from the lock area, so you don’t get the current or turbulence issues you see at some of the earlier locks. Winds aren’t a factor here either — there are trees backing up above the whole area that knock the wind down. Easy lock once you’ve negotiated the approach.
