Lock 10 Hagues Reach marks a quiet milestone on the northbound run: at Kilometre 45, Loopers are deep into the rural heart of the Trent section with Campbellford — the first genuine town since Frankford — just ahead through the Ranney Falls flight locks. The 7.3 m24 ft lift is one of the more substantial on the lower waterway, and the peaceful, bird-rich setting above the chamber gives a clear preview of the quieter stretches that define the middle TSW. There are no services on foot here, so arriving self-sufficient is essential. For Loopers tracking their progress and connecting with others on the Canadian section, AGLCA is the go-to resource for the TSW run.
Lock 10 — Hagues Reach stands on the east side of the Trent River at Kilometre 45 (Mile 28), positioned between Lock 09 — Meyers to the south and Locks 11–12 — Ranney Falls to the north. Situated within the body of water known as Haig’s Reach — a stretch approximately 2.2 km1.4 mi long and 200–300 m650–980 ft wide — this lock delivers one of the more substantial lifts on the lower Trent, raising northbound vessels 7.3 m24 ft as they travel upstream toward Campbellford. In its era, this was one of the highest single lifts on the entire waterway.
Lock 10 was constructed as part of the Trenton–to–Rice Lake section of the Trent–Severn Waterway under a contract that also included Lock 08 — Percy Reach, Lock 09 — Meyers, and the flight locks at Ranney Falls (Locks 11–12). This group was completed as part of the final phase of TSW construction that opened the Trenton link in 1918. An Ontario Hydro bridge with a vertical clearance of 8.8 m29 ft crosses the channel immediately southwest of the lock. The adjacent Hagues Reach Generating Station, approximately 1 km0.6 mi north, has been in service since 1925 with a capacity of 3 MW.
Boaters arriving at Lock 10 will find a quiet, rural lockstation surrounded by nature and well-regarded for its bird life. The elevated setting catches breezes that make warm-season overnights comfortable. Parks Canada offers overnight mooring (maximum 5 nights), camping, Ôasis pod accommodations, potable water, washrooms, showers, and a paddle dock. A large tract of open land on the adjacent island provides space to stretch your legs and explore. There are no restaurants or shops within walking distance — Campbellford, the nearest service town, lies approximately 5 km3 mi north by water through the Ranney Falls flight locks.

Not super dramatic, but you’ve got to read the river. The flow is coming from your port side on the approach, and it’ll push you toward the starboard shore if you let it. FAVOR THE TIP OF THE LOCK ENTRANCE and let yourself get set a little to starboard on the way in — work with the current rather than fight it across the whole approach. Once you’ve made the transition off the river and into the actual lock entrance, you’re absolutely good. The drama is all on the approach; inside the chamber, it’s a non-event.
