Lock 41 Gamebridge is the last lock northbound Loopers will transit before emerging onto Lake Simcoe — the largest lake on the entire Trent-Severn Waterway. The five-lock staircase descent from Bolsover ends here, and the canal gives way to twenty miles of open water ahead. This is a natural staging point to check weather forecasts and prepare for the lake crossing toward the Atherley Narrows, Orillia, and the final four locks leading to Georgian Bay. Lock 41 Gamebridge sits at kilometre 290.9 (Mile 180.7) on the Trent Canal, just 0.8 km (0.5 mi) downstream of Lock 40 Thorah. It is the last of five manual valve-gate locks in the Talbot River descent — the tight staircase that begins at Lock 37 Bolsover and drops vessels a combined 22.2 m (72.7 ft) toward Lake Simcoe. Gamebridge is the final lock northbound boaters will pass through before the canal opens onto the largest lake on the Trent-Severn Waterway. Lock staff here can provide weather forecasts for the Lake Simcoe area on request — a valuable resource before committing to the open-water crossing.
Lock 41 was constructed as part of the Balsam—Simcoe Division of the waterway, built between approximately 1900 and 1907 during a period when the canal was carved through the limestone terrain largely by horse and manpower. The lock and its approach walls are concrete, with refacing of the concrete walls at Locks 39—41 completed in recent years as part of Parks Canada’s ongoing infrastructure renewal program. The base of the original swing bridge remains visible at the lockstation, a tangible link to the early engineering of this nationally significant heritage canal.
Boaters will find mooring room on both the south and north walls, with the painted blue line on the south wall below the lock. Overnight mooring is permitted for up to two nights, and thru-camping is available for those arriving by boat or bicycle. Be aware that Highway 12 runs directly adjacent to the lockstation, and an active rail line crosses nearby — road traffic and train noise make this a less restful overnight stop compared to the quieter locks upstream. The town of Beaverton, with full services including groceries, restaurants, fuel, and an LCBO, is approximately 5 km (3 mi) south on Highway 12. Just beyond Lock 41, the Talbot River crosses the canal, and the channel continues through two fixed bridges and a swing bridge before entering Lake Simcoe.
