Lock 14 Crowe Bay is the second of five locks in the concentrated Campbellford-to-Healey Falls run that northbound Loopers typically push through in a single morning. The reward for carrying ground tackle is the Crowe Bay anchorage just upstream — a quiet, cottage-free stretch of broadened river widely regarded as one of the finest overnights on the lower TSW. Beyond Lock 14, the three Healey Falls locks (15, 16/17) deliver the section’s biggest elevation gain, including a dramatic flight lock with a combined lift of 16.5 m54 ft. Lock 14 Crowe Bay stands on the east side of the Trent River at KM 54.2Mile 33.7, roughly 2.4 km1.5 mi upstream of Lock 13 (Campbellford lock). It is the second of five locks in the concentrated Campbellford-to-Healey Falls section, which climbs approximately 37.8 m124 ft over 8 km5 mi of river. The lock takes its name from Crowe Bay — a 1.6 km1 mi stretch of broadened waterway roughly 3.2 km2 mi upstream where the Crowe River joins the Trent. Lock 14 is an island station; pedestrian access is by bridge from the east bank. The immediate surroundings are rural and pastoral, with a mix of houses and cottages. Boaters tie on the starboard (east) side at this lock.
The lock was constructed by the firm Aylmer & Brown as the first contract let in the Ontario–Rice Lake section of the waterway. Work was completed by 1912, though other sections remained unfinished and there was no immediate urgency to make the lock operational. Crowe Bay lock sits on a human-made island, fully reconstructed with a dam underneath. A submerged power cable crosses the river downstream of KM 54Mile 33.8, creating a no-anchor zone in the approach. An overhead power cable at KM 55Mile 34.3 has a clearance of 16.8 m55 ft. Submerged telephone cables cross near KM 56Mile 35. Since 2015, Parks Canada has undertaken major rehabilitation of the dams and locks at both Campbellford (Lock 13) and Crowe Bay (Lock 14) as part of a historic infrastructure reinvestment program.
Above Lock 14, the Crowe Bay anchorage is one of the finest on the lower Trent-Severn. Northbound boats depart the channel at green buoy T269, proceed northwest through deep water, and anchor in approximately 4.3–4.6 m14–15 ft well clear of a shoal on the eastern shore. The anchorage is quiet and private, with only a handful of cottages along the shoreline. From Lock 14, the Healey Falls cluster (Locks 15, 16/17) lies just ahead — three locks in quick succession including a major flight lock with a combined lift of 16.5 m54 ft. Muskellunge up to 1.8 m6 ft have been landed in these waters, and bass fishing is excellent (Ontario fishing licence required).

Always love getting to Crowe Bay — for whatever reason, even though it’s only Lock 14 of 44, this is the one where I feel like I’ve actually gotten somewhere on the system. The approach is interesting. You’ve got water flowing around both sides of the lock. On the port side, the main dam comes down — and it rages in early spring when there’s real flow in the system. On the starboard side, there’s another flow coming through, possibly a small generating station, with a couple of buildings around it. So you’re navigating up the middle of the entrance with turbulence pushing on both sides. THE TRICK is getting past the V where those two flows meet. Once you’re above that confluence point and into the lock entrance proper, you’re in good shape — it goes docile pretty quickly. Take the middle, hold your line, don’t let either side push you off track until you’re past the V. One thing to mention: I’ve had a bit of a leftward current right near the lock doors on one transit, but I’m pretty sure that was a one-off. Wouldn’t plan around it but be ready to correct if you feel it.
